MichiganWhen JoyRiders International chose May 14, 2005, for the first ADRA International Fund-Raiser Rally, it seemed to couple perfectly with the North American Division calendar for offerings. But offerings are collected in heated churches without regard to fickle Great Lakes spring weather.
This year, motorcycle riders had to cope with rain, blustery wind, and temperatures in the 40s and 50s. Yet 29 motorcyclists plus one dune buggy found a way to make a difference anyway. JoyRiders' purpose was to bring public attention to the work and mission of ADRA. Spread evenly over Green Bay, Wis. (nine motorcycles plus a dune buggy); Eau Claire, Mich. (ten motorcycles); and Warren, Mich. (also with ten motorcycles); these sites, with supportive volunteers providing food for the riders, raised over $1,770 to date with some pledges yet to be turned in. The ride in Milwaukee, Wis., was not held due to poor weather.
Raising the necessary $1,400 and more, the group will fund access to a well with clean water for the first time in Somalia for up to 5,000 villagers. What a difference that will make in community health and preventative hygiene!
JoyRiders thanks each individual who braved the weather and rode. In addition, they would like to thank those who provided hospitality services, the leadership teams of Ted and Judy Toms, of Eau Claire, Mich.; Lyle and Terri Fitzgerald, of Green Bay, Wis.; and Paul and Nancy Larsen, of Warren, Mich.; and each contributor who helped create this success story.
JoyRiders Internationals next national event will be its Second Annual Rally, held at Valley View Adventist Center, Huttonsville, W. Va., Labor Day weekend, Sept. 24, 2005.
