Lake Union to temporarily close

The Union office building is temporarily closed for sanitizing.

This move was necessitated after participants in the Lake Union Prayer Conference in Indianapolis last weekend (March 6-8) were notified via email on Friday that an attendee had subsequently exhibited flu-like symptoms, and was tested for the coronavirus. The results of that test are unknown, but are expected by early this week.

The email signed by the health director from the Marion County (Indianapolis) Public Health Department as well as Church leaders, advised a 14-day self-quarantine, which began March 8. The letter further listed Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations to follow, and what to do if a person becomes sick.

At this point, no Lake Union Conference leaders or personnel who attended the conference have come down with any symptoms.  Out of an abundance of caution, however, the leadership has chosen to self-quarantine, and ask employees who attended to do the same, until the results of the test are released.

Yesterday, in a follow up letter from Lake Union Vice President Carmelo Mercado, one of the chief organizers of the prayer conference, acknowledged that unprecedented changes have taken place across the North American Division, including the Lake Union territory since the prayer conference was held.

“This Sabbath many of our churches have closed their doors and we are being encouraged to watch our church services online. Our schools and even our universities have switched from face-to-face classes to online instruction. The governors of our states have dramatically limited attendance of gatherings, with one state setting the limit to as low as 100 people.”

He stated the need for Seventh-day Adventists to be seen as anchors of stability and pillars of hope during this time. “As Adventists this should not really surprise us since the Bible states there would be an increase in pestilence in the last days (Luke 21:11), but as humans we can be tempted to be anxious. If you are anxious remember that the Lord is our anchor who will give you perfect peace because of your trust in Him.”

Further updates will be communicated as soon as information is available, including when the Lake Union building will be reopened.
