The Hinsdale Seventh-day Adventist Church had the privilege of connecting with thousands of neighbors during UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Hinsdale Hospital’s 72nd Annual Ice Cream Social on August 30, 2026. Held in downtown Hinsdale, Illinois, the longstanding community tradition draws a large crowd each year, with families and children gathering for an afternoon of activities, entertainment, fellowship, and, of course, ice cream. This year, Hinsdale Church joined the celebration with a simple goal to connect with the community through one meaningful question: “What are you thankful for?”
Church members hosted “Hinsdale’s Gratitude Table,” featuring a 10-foot banner where community members were invited to write something for which they were grateful. Volunteers of all ages, including some as young as three years old, greeted neighbors with smiles and encouraged them to add their own words of gratitude. Throughout the day, people of every generation stopped to participate. Some quickly wrote down the first thing that came to mind, while others paused thoughtfully before adding their message. The responses ranged from simple everyday blessings to deeply personal milestones. Participants expressed gratitude for family, health, loved ones, and everyday moments of joy, while one individual shared thankfulness for a successful transplant surgery.
The Gratitude Table was intentionally simple. There was no complicated activity or elaborate presentation – just an opportunity to connect with neighbors, offer encouragement, and create a positive moment in someone’s day. That simplicity became part of what made the experience so powerful. Seeing so many people pause and reflect on the blessings in their lives served as a reminder that gratitude can meet people wherever they are.
The experience also reinforced an important lesson: community outreach does not always have to be large or complex to make an impact. Sometimes ministry begins simply by being present- offering a smile, starting a conversation, and creating space for someone to recognize the good already surrounding them. The afternoon allowed church members to meet new people, strengthen relationships within the Hinsdale community, and demonstrate the church’s desire to be an active, caring presence among its neighbors.
Scripture reminds us, “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever” (Psalm 107:1, NIV). In a world where people often carry unseen burdens, even a brief moment focused on gratitude can offer hope, encouragement, and peace.
As the banner gradually filled with colorful messages throughout the afternoon, it became a visible reflection of the many blessings, stories, and answered prayers represented within the community. Hinsdale Seventh-day Adventist Church members pray that the seeds of gratitude, hope, and peace planted through each interaction will continue to make an impact long after the Ice Cream Social has ended.
