Photography Guidelines

The best photos show action and are not posed. Please submit only your best photos.

Prints

  • Mail prints with story to: Lake Union Herald, P.O. Box 287, Berrien Springs, MI 49103-0287.
  • Place a return address label on the reverse side.
  • Identify photos by writing a number on the label. 
  • At the end of your story, make a list of the photo numbers.
  • Beside the photo numbers, write a caption. Tell what is happening in the photo using a complete sentence; identify individuals from left to right with first and last names (unless photo is of a large group).
  • Place photos between card stock or card board before mailing.
  • Do no use paper clips or tape on the photos.
  • Be sure ink is dry on sticky note or label before stacking pictures; pencil or typed label is preferred.  

Digital Images

  • Be sure the digital camera used captures at least seven megapixels.
  • Set camera at its highest quality mode with largest size
  • Send color images only
  • E-mail digital images to herald@lakeunion.org, and identify which article they are for; include photo identification. Tell what is happening in the photo using a complete sentence; identify individuals from left to right with first and last names (unless photo is of a large group).
  • Digital images may also be mailed to: Lake Union Herald, P.O. Box 287, Berrien Springs, MI 49103-0287. Send CD-Rom with JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif) files, using above format for captions. 

Scanned Images

  • Original prints should be scanned at 300 dpi, with a minimum size of 4 x 6 inches
  • Scan in CMYK mode
  • JPEG (.jpg) files are acceptable if they are saved at the highest possible resolution; TIFF files are also accepted.
  • E-mail scanned images to herald@lakeunion.org, and identify which article they are for; include photo identification. Tell what is happening in the photo using a complete sentence; identify individuals from left to right with first and last names (unless photo is of a large group).
  • Scanned images may also be mailed to: Lake Union Herald, P.O. Box 287, Berrien Springs, MI 49103-0287. Send CD-Rom with JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif) files, using above format for captions. 

Photo Releases

  • Photo releases should be obtained when submitting photos of community members or public figures.
  • Photo releases should be obtained when photos include minors, unless church, school, or camp has a signed release already.
  • Photo releases should be obtained for all professional photos.

Photographer's Credit

Send photographer's first and last name so they will receive photo credit in the Lake Union Herald
