Most of the audience were visitors, many unfamiliar with the church or its beliefs. For some, it was their first time in a church building. The event became more than a concert. It was an invitation to experience community and the presence of God through music.
The concert featured pianist Cristóbal Araneda Yáñez, a 14-year-old from Chile, who began leading hymns as a young child and started piano studies at age four. In 2021, he received a scholarship to the Conservatory of the University of Chile and became the pianist for the Las Condes Adventist Church in Santiago. He traveled to Hinsdale in April to study with Professor Victor Moreno and now continues those lessons virtually.
Also performing was Justin Kent Gjata, who began studying piano at age 12 under Moreno. A graduate of Roosevelt University, he has performed widely in the United States and internationally. In 2023, he was named Youth Ambassador of Peace in Albania. He teaches at Bel Canto Music Academy and collaborates with the College of DuPage music department. He is set to begin a master’s degree at Roosevelt this fall.
Leading the orchestra was Reid Taylor, a conductor and operatic tenor known for his work with Carnegie Hall and the Opera Festival of Chicago. His direction brought a blend of discipline and emotional depth to the evening.
The concert was organized by the church’s music ministry, led by Heidi Grozdic, who views each event as an opportunity for ministry. “Music is a divine language that speaks to hearts when words fall short,” she said. “We believe God’s love can be experienced through it.”
Efforts to make guests feel at home began well before the first note. Signs throughout the building offered QR codes linking to future events. Volunteers were ready at the doors to greet and assist newcomers. Following the performance, attendees gathered in the fellowship hall to enjoy plant-based refreshments. The reception reflected the church’s focus on hospitality and health.
Many visitors stayed to talk with performers and church members. Some asked about future programs or how to learn more about the church. The positive response reinforced the music ministry’s mission to offer events that create a welcoming space and introduce people to faith through beauty and excellence.
“Our prayer is that every concert becomes more than an event,” Grozdic said. “We want it to be a ministry moment that draws people closer to God.”
