After a 10-year hiatus, the Andrews University Passion Play is returning to Berrien Springs on April 4, 2026, offering an immersive, indoor-and-outdoor, seven-scene walkthrough experience depicting the final week of Jesus’ life.
The all-day event—scheduled 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and beginning at the Howard Performing Arts Center—guides guests through live scenes that move from a bustling marketplace to the Last Supper, Gethsemane, the trial, crucifixion and Resurrection. The production has historically drawn thousands from the surrounding community.
“It’s powerful to witness the story of Christ’s death and resurrection unfolding around you,” said Esteban Grajales, marketing director for the Passion Play. “As you walk from scene to scene, you’re not just observing; you’re experiencing the weight of the cross and the hope of the Resurrection in a way that stays with you.”
Free e-tickets are now available for reservation on the Passion Play website, and attendees are encouraged to reserve in advance.
A renewed call for volunteers is also underway, with more than 400 people needed to staff the large-scale production. Residents in the Berrien Springs can participate through the marketplace portion of the experience, and families are invited to come dressed in costume to serve as villagers interacting with guests. Additional roles include Pharisees, members of an angry crowd, extra disciples and behind-the-scenes support in costuming and makeup.
The Andrews University Passion Play began in 2003, rooted in the vision of Pastor Ron Whitehead, who grew up attending passion plays with his family—including the world-famous production in Oberammergau, Germany. After researching regional offerings in 2002 and finding no comparable interactive outdoor passion play within a two-hour drive, Whitehead presented the idea to university leaders and received unanimous support. Planning began in fall 2002 with a team of students, campus leaders and community members, culminating in the first production the following year.
The play continued for years before it was discontinued in 2016. Plans to revive it in 2020 were halted as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted preparations. The current return effort began in 2025, when Andrews University alumnus Leo Aguilera initiated a renewed push to bring the play back. With the partnership of Pioneer Memorial Church and Andrews University, the Passion Play is now set to return to the community this spring.
